McKenney: Police Chief hiring must wait until after election, and avoid conflict of interest

Mayoral candidates Catherine McKenney and Bob Chiarelli sent a letter to the Ontario Civilian Police Commission to raise a potential conflict of interest in the hiring of a new police chief mid campaign

October 18, 2022 (Ottawa) —Today, mayoral candidates Catherine McKenney and Bob Chiarelli sent a letter to the Ontario Civilian Police Commission to raise a potential conflict of interest in the hiring of a new police chief mid campaign. McKenney and Chiarelli wrote with a pressing concern: to flag the potential conflict of interest of Councillor El-Chantiry overseeing both the hiring of the new police chief and the Mark Sutcliffe campaign.

“A rushed process to hire a police chief in the middle of the campaign, overseen by an outgoing councillor days before an election, will not restore the trust we need after a national crisis,” said McKenney. “Mark Sutcliffe is the only major mayoral candidate who is comfortable with a new police chief being hired in the middle of the campaign. It is a potential conflict of interest that Councillor El-Chantiry is overseeing both the hiring of the new police chief and the Mark Sutcliffe campaign as a Co-Chair.”

While the city was occupied during the convoy, the public’s confidence in the Ottawa Police Service was shaken to its core as residents experienced hardship, both physical and mental, as demonstrators illegally occupied our city for weeks on end without effective intervention by the police and City of Ottawa officials. Our Police Chief resigned, the OPSB was replaced, and a national emergency ensued. Months later, we are still in the process of learning the lessons but it will take much longer for public trust to be fully restored.

“The people of Ottawa understand this is a conflict of interest. To build a City Hall that you can trust, we must restore trust in the Ottawa Police Services, and this includes an ethical hiring of the new chief.”
