"Canadians deserve an inquiry with the mandate to fully explore the convoy in the context of growing far-right extremism and white supremacy, both here and abroad."
McKenney vowed to bring a motion to a special council meeting Monday, asking the city to formally request the federal government take full operational control over the protest inside the Parliamentary precinct.
Somerset ward councillor Catherine McKenney says the only satisfactory outcome of any negotiations would be for the illegal occupiers to leave Ottawa and not come back every weekend, adding that residents just want their city back.
“For a third weekend the City of Ottawa continues to be mocked by illegal occupiers while the residents of downtown continue to live under the constant threat of violence and lawlessness, abandoned by the people elected to represent them.”
"They were unable to sleep. They felt helpless. Many people who have been in touch with me have moved out of their homes," McKenney told CBC. "But we also have people living downtown or living in social housing, and we have seniors who have not been able to leave."
"They’re also seeing the images that we're all seeing, of very right-wing extremist messages: the flags that display the swastika, confederate flags, images of a prime minister being lynched," McKenney said. "I’m not sure that I would continue to call this peaceful."
"At some point we need assurances that we're not going to allow our city and our downtown to be seized and to push out others and make people frightened to live and move about in their own neighbourhoods."
"Several members of this group are connected to militant racist, sexist, and homophobic groups. Their statements and placards promote xenophobia. They are not here to only raise voices against vaccination mandates, but to also fuel hatred against the very fabric of our society."
