Celebrating Pride and building a better Ottawa

Catherine McKenney issued the following statement marking Pride week and unveiling plans for a 2SLBGTQI+ Advisory Council for the City of Ottawa.

With Pride week in full swing, it’s important to remember that support for queer and trans communities must go beyond Pride week — it must go all year-long.

That is why I commit to establishing a 2SLBGTQI+ Advisory Council that will guide the City of Ottawa on its 2SLGBTQI+ inclusion efforts.

As mayor, I will establish and work with the Advisory Council to increase access to essential services for 2SLGBTQI+ communities, so everyone from queer kids to trans adults can get the support they need.

Everyone deserves to feel safe in our city. But rising homophobia and transphobia has raised the stakes, and we must act now. I will work with the community to make our city safe for everyone, including 2SLGBTQI+ communities.

To end Pride week, I am getting ready to put on my rainbow shoes and march in the parade. Please consider joining me by signing up here

Happy Pride, Ottawa. See you at the parade!

Yours truly,

Catherine McKenney
